Michigan Playground Injury Lawyers
Childhood Playground Injuries
While every child may love a trip to the playground, it’s hard to deny the risks involved. The combination of uneven surfaces, playground equipment in various states of repair, and the unpredictability of other peoples’ children can create an environment where children can find themselves easily injured.
Whether at the park or at school, if your loved ones have been injured while using playground equipment, the compassionate & experienced lawyers of Scott Goodwin Law can help. Our personal injury attorneys will work with you to seek damages for your loved one’s injury, and can help your family navigate the potentially murky waters of these cases.
Playground Injury Causes & Statistics
Strangulation is the cause of most playground deaths, and falls account for 80 percent of the 220,000 injuries on playgrounds in the United States per year. A survey of Michigan playgrounds found 88 percent of playgrounds lacked adequate surface protection – less than the recommended nine inches of loose fill or wood chips– and 65 percent of playgrounds had slides and climbers higher than the recommended maximum of six feet. To be safe, avoid play areas built on hard grass or asphalt, and look for hazards where clothing can get caught and strangle a child.
Playground Injury Prevention & Safety Tips
Amidst the chaos of the average playground, it can be difficult to help your children stay safe. By keeping these tips in mind, you can work to mitigate the chance of injury when your family is at the park:
- Visit the playground ahead of time to confirm that your children are the right age to be playing there
- Focus on visiting playgrounds with safety surfaces like wood chips or rubber
- Don’t let your children wear clothing loose enough to get tangled in playground equipment or caught on sharp objects
- Make sure there’s proper sightlines across the playground for you to be able to keep a better eye on you children at all times
- Reinforce proper playground equipment usage with your children, including swings, slides, and similar implements
- If your children are riding bicycles, scooters, or other conveyances to the playground, make sure they wear proper safety equipment on the whole ride there and back
