Suspect Arrested in Newaygo County Pedestrian Hit and Run Accident
61-year-old Steven Jones of Woodland Park, MI had a habit of taking early morning walks. On the morning of September 24th, Jones had been walking near Bitely, MI on East 11 Mile Road, west of North Bingham Road, when he was hit and killed by a car that fled the scene. It is believed the car accident occurred around 7:00 AM. A passerby spotted Jones’ body and reported it to 911 at 7:18 AM.
A suspect was arrested the next day following a police tip. The suspect is a 36-year-old man from Brohman. No other details about the suspect’s identity have been released at this time. Jones’ wife Sheri released a statement saying she is grateful her family can have the closure.
In July, Jones had been involved in an accident that killed 51-year-old photographer Jeff Dykehouse. Dykehouse had been riding his bike when Jones’ SUV struck him from behind. Jones was arrested immediately following the accident, but toxicology tests showed that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the accident. Prosecutors said that Jones may have been facing a misdemeanor driving offense, but no charges had been pressed at the time of Jones’ death.
